The Light of the World…Candles

The burning of candles for spiritual purposes is a practice that dates back to ancient times. For as long as there have been candles, there were people who believed that a lit candle can connect the physical world with the spiritual realm. To these people, fire and flame are representations of the spark of creation.

To light a candle is to illuminate the self.

Incense

Incense has been used since ancient times in religious rituals in ancient Egypt, Babylon, and Greece. The name derivation comes from Latin, “to burn”. Aromatic Essential Oils & Aromatherapy: A History of Power & Healing

For more than 3,500 years, aromatic oils have made their presence known, with regularity, throughout all major civilizations. From Mesopotamia to China, to Eqypt, to India, civilizations and cultures have turned to herb and flower infused oils to enhance spiritual and religious ceremonies and celebrations, as well as magnify medicinal and healing support. Aromatherapy is thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose; thereby, sending messages through the nervous system to the limbic system, the part of the brain controlling emotions.

The famous Greek, Hippocrates, the father of “Western Medicine”, recommended daily baths and massages for wellness and the historic figure of Cleopatra was renowned for her art of seduction through custom blended aromatic essential oils, along with indulging in luxurious fermented milk baths created with jasmine, myrrh and rose.

A name which may not be that familiar to many is French perfumer and biochemist, Rene-Maurice Cattefosse, who penned the book, “Aromatherapie” which contained the initial endeavors of aromatheray and application of essential oils. While working in his laboratory, the biochemist burned himself and took to treating his own burns with a distillation of lavender oil. Rene-Mauricen used this knowledge in, subsequently, creating his own impactful life. The aromatherapeutic anitiseptic oil was used to treat wounded soldiers in military hospitals during WWI.

Today, ongoing studies are linking essential aromatic oils to positively impacting and supporting an individual’s emotional well being, specifically, in the areas of anxiety, depression, and sleep. Smaller studies suggest that aromatherapy with lavender oil may help  reduce pain for people with osteoarthritis of the knee and Improve quality of life for people with dementia.

Ayurvedic practices have gained popularity for the holistic approach of mind, body and spirit in order to center and balance oneself and obtain calmess and peace of mind and thought.
